Over the years, we have heard many people say that the Willamette Valley reminds them most of Northwest Spain, and that they suspect varieties native to that area would thrive here. Northwest Spain happens to be the region of Spain where we have spent the most time, so we are not able to opine on that.
Having said that, we immensely enjoy the varietals that are native to that area, like Godello and Mencia. Perhaps more important, we trust the judgment and expertise of the people who have told us this.
So, after a longer-than-desired back and forth with nurseries to get our hands on the plant material we wanted, we have gotten started. Our Godello vines, at long last, were planted on November 9, 2019.
This time, the entire family pitched in. As you can see, Francisco was very proud of his planting skills, showing them off to anyone who would demonstrate the least bit of interest in observing his handiwork. Though his technique was solid, we are working to get his number of vines planted per hour up a bit. Magdalena, on the other hand, spent much of the time sleeping in the Ergobaby. And a special thanks to our friends Bree, Chad and Mason for pitching in out of the goodness of their hearts.
Next up...Mencia and Savagnin.
